Time management. It’s something that nearly everyone struggles with, whether you’ve been in the business 20 days or 20 years. With only 24 hours in the day, sometimes it seems impossible to get everything done.
However, getting ahold of time management is essential for your professional and personal success. According to Lucemi Consulting,
“Managing your time wisely improves work-life balance and increases happiness. Good time management also reduces stress and allows you to achieve your goals faster… [t]ime management benefits you in every area of your life.”
But where should you start?
Like with most things in life, the first and most important thing to do is slow down and reevaluate. It’s important to remember that you are the one who determines how you will use the time given to you. Often times, people get swept up in the busyness of life and feel as though they are no longer in control of how their time is used — but that’s simply not true.
As keynote speaker and multi-million-dollar business man Michael Altshuler puts it:
“The bad news is that time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.”
One helpful practice is sitting down, putting pen to paper, and planning your commitments out. You should start with the big picture by making an annual calendar. Begin with your “rocks” for the year — this includes things like vacations, family events, and any other major events that are critically important to you. What’s happening this year that you absolutely don’t want to miss?
Once you have the big picture, you can begin filling in the gaps. Remember to prioritize: what is most important, and what can wait? Or even not happen at all? When you realize you are in control, and that you don’t have to do everything, life can start to feel a little less overwhelming.
The main goal in all this is to establish that you are in control of your time. Certain parts of this calendar will change, and you will have to be flexible at times, but by planning your year out you are taking control.
As a word of encouragement: take the time today, this week, or even this month to sit down and put that pen to paper. It may seem like another task to add to your list, but we promise it will make that list feel much less overwhelming.
